Business intelligence is the target of Brasil Auto Parts’ activities

The activity calendar of Brasil Auto Parts (BAP), a project carried out by Sindipeças (The National Association of Brazilian Auto Parts Manufacturers) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), has interesting initiatives to encourage the internationalization of the sector in the first half of 2022

This year seems to finally mark the resumption of on-site events, but even if it happens otherwise, the project has been planned to maintain the strategy of developing a larger number of actions that can boost the business activity of the Brazilian industry abroad.

In the first months of the year, BAP focused on answering queries on business intelligence, completing and presenting (in March) a study on the Spanish market and organizing the missions to Peru and Ecuador, on April 25 - 29, and to Mexico, on May 23-27.

For an overview of business intelligence figures, a balance sheet calculated by BAP shows that, since the beginning of this agreement (in 2021), 154 queries have been answered, covering issues such as studies, search for business players, competitors, fleet of vehicles, variety of origin, and support material in different languages. More than 240 NCM (acronym for Mercosur Common Nomenclature) entries were looked up. Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama and Peru top the list of 40 countries mentioned in the reports.

The dynamics of BAP’s operations has also had positive effects on the experience of member companies, as shown in the following statements.

“We always export through traders, with a person from the domestic market monitoring the operations. The first work we did in the field of foreign trade was to detect similarities between fleets in other countries, and we observed Latin America's neighbors carefully. We’ve recently hired an expert in exports, as we want to do regular and steady work. We have a product mix of over four thousand items in the field of road implements and components for suspension of trucks and buses that are easily adaptable to the foreign market. Investment in exports has been a learning experience, and we make a point of traveling with BAP, as it is a low investment that brings good return.” (Abel Ferreira, co-owner and commercial director of Rivertec, founded over 50 years ago, and a member of BAP since 2015).

“In 2021, we used the project's online business rounds very often to leverage business, especially with Mexico. We’ve already exported to 11 countries and our target market is the Americas. The events organized by BAP are in the interest of Viemar, as they bear the name of Brazil on them, causing prospective importers to feel safe. We’ve organized our portfolio to expand exports. Our target is to export twice as much as in 2021. We wish to export to at least five new countries. With BAP, we participated in Expopartes Colombia as visitors and will participate in the two missions (Peru/Ecuador and Mexico) planned for the first half of the year. As we are part of the Management Committee of Brasil Auto Parts, we believe that by being supported by the project, all member companies can seek the route of internationalization”. (Wilson Tadeu Constantino, Export Business Manager at Viemar, a company founded 26 years ago, which manufactures parts for suspension, steering and brakes and has a new plant in Rio Grande do Sul to serve the foreign market).

Dubai has consolidated its position as a market hub for Brazilian auto parts

The participation of eight member companies in the Automechanika Dubai 2021 fair generated US$ 1.8 million in business deals

Automechanika Dubai, the largest international international trade show for the auto parts industry in the Middle East and Africa, was held at the Dubai World Trade Center from 14 to 16 December 2021. Brasil Auto Parts organized the Brazilian pavilion, and the following companies participated: Autolinea, Fras-le, Indisa, Metalmatrix, Rio Riosulense, Suporte Rei, Vannuci and Zen S.A.

The outcomes of the fair highlighted the importance of operating in this region: 369 business contacts, US$ 1.8 million in business during the fair and the expectation of earning US$ 4.3 million in the next 12 months.

For David Catasiner, from Zen SA, the gains were exceptional in this 10th participation. “It is a fair that offers great return. People want to shake hands, do business. The aftermarket is booming all over the world, a fact that is confirmed in the Middle East and Africa”, he explained.

For Metalmatrix, which was an exhibitor for the third time, the event is as an opportunity to explore new markets. “In the United Arab Emirates, there is plenty of opportunity and every Brazilian company should expand its operations around the world”, Cristiano Grillo, a representative of the company, advised.

Ricardo Bozza, from Indisa, and Alessandro Wonsowis, from Autolinea, have similar opinions. They believe the event proved to be very interesting after a two-year break. They stressed that “it was a moment of recovery, of reviving the relationship with our customers, showcasing Brazil and gaining market share. The fair is a good platform for this. We recommend that everyone should be in the next edition”.

Evolution plays a key role in the history of Brazilian auto parts

Edimilson Navarro, representative of the member companies Ampri and Sampel, shares memories, facts and lessons learned from the sector’s internationalization journey

Forty years ago, when foreign trade initiatives were quite limited and companies used to focus on the domestic market, professional Edimilson Navarro began to pursue his career in the field of international business. His experience is intertwined with the history of the Brazilian auto parts industry and shows the advances brought by technology and by the incentive provided by Sindipeças to exports in the sector.

In his view, even in the 1970s, companies needed to have total dedication to be able to do business outside Brazil. There was a great deal of bureaucracy, as well as requirements, documents with countless copies that could only be sent by post, in addition to very high shipping costs and fees. After the governmental decision to start opening the borders in 1992, the advance of technology and the very movement of globalization of the economy, this situation began to change. Sindipeças, at that time, sought to expand its operations with specific actions to support exports, but everything happened slowly, since the world was also very different. The game-changing year was 2006, when the first agreement with ApexBrasil was signed to implement the Brasil Auto Parts project.

“It has structured the sector to a great extent, causing the Brazilian auto parts industry to reach great maturity and expand its horizons”, Navarro explained. Owing to the presence of large multinational companies and the European influence on fleet development, auto parts had to be manufactured locally, which ultimately leveraged sales to other countries, especially in Latin America.

“As part of the Brasil Auto Parts Management Committee, I see that the companies I represent, Ampri and Sampel, and the others associated with the project, have the capacity to serve a variety of markets, either with the products in their catalog or by developing new products according to customer needs”, the trader said. In his opinion, those who import from Brazil receive quality products and services, with good delivery times and first-rate service.

“The lesson I learned in almost half a century of work is that we need to make a difference, going far beyond price and paying special attention to technological changes and market behavior”, Navarro added.

3rd Auto Parts Industry Meeting will discuss transformations in the sector

The event will be held online on June 20, 2022 and will discuss the opportunities brought by changes in vehicle architecture and energy matrix, in addition to showing the evolution of the Brazilian industry in this scenario

Brazilian and foreign speakers will present, with simultaneous translation (Portuguese and English), their points of view and knowledge about very important issues for the automotive sector, for example, the environment (especially the low carbon economy), digital transformation, macro trends in the aftermarket and an outlook on the Asian market, a region that currently manufactures around 40% of the world's vehicles.

“We are certain that we will promote vigorous debate about the paths that the auto parts sector should take to remain competitive. And we will also bring a broad view of Brazil, of how local manufacturers are dealing with topics such as industry 4.0, mobility, research and development”, said Gábor János Deák, Director of Technology at Sindipeças and leader of the event’s organizing committee.

The 2019 and 2021 editions had 28 speakers, 23 themes and more than 1,000 people attending the panels and conferences, with an increasing number of foreign participants. For 2022, a significant increase is expected in the participation of representatives from Latin and North America, Europe and Asia. This way, the event is gradually becoming more global.

“In both editions, we were able to emphasize the opportunities for growth and internationalization, as well as the urgency of innovation. The automotive chain, in general, was able to ponder over changes in production methods, new forms of automobile propulsion and consumption habits. Now, in addition to what is already known, the 3rd Auto Parts Industry Meeting will take a closer look at the ongoing changes that are yet to come”, Deak pointed out.
